Unexpected New Year

I was planning to celebrate new year with family and friends back in Sweden but I was stuck in Bangkok! My flight from Koh Samui was badly delayed so I missed my connection to Stockholm.

I always believe things happen for a reason so here I am spending a lovely new year with my best friends from Finland.

They happened to be at the Oriental hotel in Bangkok! And of course I remembered as Select had secured a VIP treatment and a table for them at the Riverside Terrace for the festivities.

Spending Christmas at Kamalaya is a different wonderful healthy experience. We are very busy from morning til night by taking treatments, sporting, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong etc. and meeting so many interesting new people.

Evening Event in Cannes

Last week my Director of Products Fredrik and I were working hard in Cannes. We attended ILTM which is the luxury trade fair for travel. We had 40 meetings each and also we enjoyed lots of networking at the evening events.

One of the most important event was the evening celebration with One & Only at Hotel Martinez. All of their managers from the hotels were there and it was a great opportunity to catch up with everyone again

Vietnam in focus

I was invited for a nice lunch in Stockholm by Vietnam Airlines earlier this week. Talking about Vietnam brings lovely memories.

I have been to Vietnam two times and it's indeed a country I like very much. The Vietnamese people are lovely and the culture and some of the beaches are amazing.

The island of Con Dao is one of my favorites.

The food is great - here I'm learning how to make delicious Vietnamese spring rolls.

of Vietnam where you find the cultural cities Hoi An and Hue.

His Dream came through...

Bhutan, the hidden Himalayan kingdom that was kept secret for almost 400 years, is opening it's doors.
The slogan of Bhutan is; 'Happiness is a place'
Actually I feel happiness here is their brand.

I visited Bhutan a few years ago and stayed at the most beautiful Aman resorts.

I also met Jiwan, who worked as a butler and who asked me to fulfill his dreams...

Here you can see Jiwan who had a dream to go abroad one day and visit Sweden. It took Hanna and me 5 months hard work to get all permissions... Jiwan finally ended up in Stockholm and worked for 6 months in our office as an exclusive butler and a Bhutan Expert. His dream came through and I'm sure he thinks of us every day.

I was having a lovely dinner with Ilse and Max from Select Collection at the new restaurant Kamp Signe in Helsinki.

It was opened in May by Sami Tallberg and his team. It's known for top quality, organic and exotic range of Finnish specialities. The wild plants and herbs are hand-picked and the other ingredients are also by local producers.

Compliments from the chef - Thank you Sami. I can truly recommend this champagne. No sugar added.

The center court at The Royal Swedish Tennis hall was packed today of people enjoying the finals of Stockholm Open

The single final was between the Finnish player Nieminen and the French player Monfils.

I have recently visited SHA Wellness Resort close to Alicante in Spain, the best of its kind in Europe. SHA offers many different health programmes, such as weight loss, detox or anti-stress programmes. You can also go there to relax, take some yoga classes, eat healthy food and stay in beautiful accomodation by the sea. And if you want you can take private dance lessons! That is what I did and learned salsa, bachata, cha cha and merengue. Best of all; I met some very lovely people at SHA, who become dear friends to me.

The Day that changed the World

Today I'm watching the world Trade Center Memorial. The day 10 years ago that changed the world. I think we all reflect back to that day remembering how we reacted and what we did.

For the travel industry it was a big disaster as all customers became so afraid of flying. Our business came to a complete stop for 3 months.

I remember being very worried what would now happen to the world and of course worried of my company and all my 30 hard working staff - but we were a strong company and together we fought the difficulties which made us survive and made us even stronger.

A site which millions once associated with death, devastion and abject terror but has now transformed into a place of peace, tranquillity and sadness

A Night for UNICEF

Last Monday the golf tournament Operakällaren Trophy was held to raise money for Unicef's work in Eastern Africa. The evening that was arranged by Micael Bindefeldt was very successful and many people contributed with wonderful donations. Select Collection gave a trip and a duo massage at our beautiful spa. It raised 25 000 SEK to Unicef! All in all this charity event raised 2,4 Million SEK which is a great contribution in this time of need.

I had a nice chat with Jan Eliasson, whom I admire and who today is doing a great job for the Water Aid Project. Jan is a lovely person with lots of compassion for life.

He had an exciting career - His track record is as tall as impressive. Foreign Minister, chairman of the UN General Assembly, Sweden's Ambassador in Washington DC, State Secretary at the Foreign Ministry, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, UN Secretary General's personal representative in the Iran-Iraq conflict, to name a few.

The other day I got some very nice sea salt from the Dead Sea. Some lovely persons from the Israel Tourist Office were visiting me with presents.

10 Years Anniversary

Our lovely Country Manager in Finland, Ilse Nyman has worked 10 years at Select Collection. We opened in Finland 12 years ago and can you imagine that all staff in Helsinki have been there more than 10 years! It's an unbeatable experience they have...

Ilse is highly appreciated not only by me and her colleagues but also our most valued clients just love her. We did have a lovely afternoon with cold champagne and a gift of course. The picture is taken in our beautiful office on Bulevardi in Helsinki.

I had a nice experience in Paris that I would like to share. It was recommended to me by the newly opened stunning Mandarin Oriental hotel in Paris. Perhaps you have read in the previous blog posts about my days in Paris and this lovely propety where Select Collection will have a unique contract with great added values to our clients.

I went to the Restaurant Mini Palais. This is the entrance!

This is the beautiful interior. The restaurant is quite big but still has a cozy and nice ambiance. You can choose between indoor or outdoor seating but please make sure you have a reservation.

The food is just great and they have my favourite dish Vitello Tonnato - Veal with tuna sauce.

My first appointment was a beautiful dinner at a great cosy restaurant called Fish La Boissonnerie at St Germain with Alain. Alain lives in St Barth in the Caribbean and has his second home in Paris. He is not just a great friend but a gentleman and a lovely person.

When you live in one of the Nordic countries the weather becomes an important factor. According to statistics the last minute trips have increased with 15% this summer. At Select Collection, we can tell this change and are keeping busy!

The end of El Bulli as we know it

Tomorrow, Saturday, the very last meal at Spanish El Bulli will be served. El Bulli has been awarded the World's Best Restaurant several times. There are two reasons why this restaurant is so famous; its groundbreaking gastronomy, and the fact that it is almost impossible to get a table. Rumor has it that almost two million people tried to book a table this year.

El Bulli will open again in 2014, not as a restaurant but as a creative centre. Whoever wants to try the Adriàs brothers food can instead visit the newly opened Tapas bar Tickets in Barcelona, or have som snacks from El Bulli at Cocktail bar 41°.*

I was there a couple of years ago with some friends. Thanks to the General Manager at wonderful Alva Park we managed to get a table. Even though El Bulli now closes, the area around Alva Park in Costa Brava is still where most of the fine gourmet restaurants are situated. El Bulli is situated on the Costa Brava coast, 170 km north of Barcelona. The restaurant has not changed since the first time Ferran Adria came here. The same balks in the ceiling and the same rustic athmosphere exist today.

Last night I was invited to the Embassy of Egypt for a Buffet Reception. It was a very nice evening with great company and nice food.

Organic Friday

Today I gathered the Select Collection staff for some Friday Champagne - the organic Fleury, only produced in a quantity of a couple of thousand a year. This is the first Champagne that was certified as biodynamic. The method is very old fashioned, with a horse and carriage to collect the grapes and no chemicals at all used in the process.

To that I served the ecological chocolate I watched being produced in Grenada. See my old blog

I wanted the staff to taste and give their comments, as I am considering selling this particular 82% chocolate bar in our shops. And everyone liked it!

Yesterday I met with the two founders of Project Playground - a non-profit organization working for children in Cape Town. Their aim is simple - kids should be kids! And the way for them to really be kids is to focus on play. This duo is devoted to create an opportunity for these kids to play and get a better future. We are now looking at a collaboration between Project Playground and Select Collection.

A Perfect Ending!

To stay at Sandy Lane in Barbados is a perfect ending to a six week familiarizon trip in the Caribbean.

I have visited seven islands, 21 hotels and 20 villas. It has all been very educating but also fun. I will now make a full report to all our staff in all Select Collection offices.

At Belmont Estate, approx an hours drive from the capital St George in Grenada, you will find one of the best chocolates in the world.

Here you can see, feel and taste how the chocolates developes from Tree-To-Bar

Packed in sacks to be transported to the nearby factory

Here in the factory, that I visited (after running around in the forest) the beans are going through a fermentation process for a week.

After that, the beans are put out to dry in the sun for an other week. In case of rain, it's like the center court at Wimbledon; the roofs that you can see in the background are pulled over the beans.

Beautiful Grenada

Yesterday we had a full day tour around the beautiful island of Grenada. The island is very lush and green and the people are very friendly. Here you can see some pictures of a truly authentic destination, worthwhile to visit.

Pirate Bay on the west coast, the place where the real Pirates of the Caribbean once acted.

Grenada has stunning waterfalls.

And the water we drink is from the the falls.

My Favorite Villa

I have visited 20 villas while staying at the island of Mustique. I really enjoy looking at the different villas as most of them have been created by famous architects and designers. I have also gained a huge knowledge about which villas are suitable for our valued clients.

This villa is just truly wonderful with great interior and atmosphere and is one of my favorites.

It has six beautiful bedrooms, all with private big bathrooms and separate entrances.

The living areas are very spacious and have great ambience.

All villas have a minimum of four staff; butler, chef, housekeeper and gardener.

Kerson has been working as the head of this villa for years and is very dedicated.

Not only Glitz and Glamour

The mere mention of Mustique conjures up images of fabulous villas. European Royalty and glamorous popstars and other celebrities; certainly, this privately owned island, originally purchased and developed by the honourable Colin Tennant in 1958, is a playground for the rich and famous.

However, there's a lot more to Mustique than glitz and glamour.

The three square mile island has some of the finest beaches in the Grenadines. Macaroni beach in the picture is consistently rated as one if the top beaches in the southern Caribbean.

The fruit market is lovely

If you forgot your sandals, there are a few shops in the small village

You can find the daily items in the local shop but most goods are daily shipped in from St Vincent

The famous Basils's Bar which I will tell you more about

Church at Sundays is a must. It's better than going to a gospel concert.

Jeanette and Gordon and their great team are managing the best villas in the world. They work for the Mustique Company and they are truly dedicated to give our clients the best vacation ever.

Jeanette is not just the most powerful woman here but also a very lovely person.

Today the weather was just perfect for a beach excursion. At Mustique you find many lovely beaches. The most famous one is Macaroni, close to our villa. Now was time for new adventures, to visit the White Lagoon Beach and the Black Sand Beach.

Yesterday it was time to move on after one lovely week in Antigua to the island of Anguilla.

Yes this is Caribbean! Monopoly is never good and Liat seems to rule here. Please just travel with one suitcase and not too heavy!

I had two and it cost me 100 USD in excess luggage. I tried to use my charm and tell them that I'm out for six weeks and I have loads of heavy broschure and I'm promoting the Caribbean islands but no success.

The crew was friendly. The flight was only 30 min so no service onboard except to my fellow passenger, a very nice gentleman, who got a drink but again he was the former minister of Anguilla.

Last night in Antigua

To visit English Harbour in Antigua is a must. The island has a convenient size so everywhere takes about 30 min.

At English Harbour you have loads of stunning boats and yachts and last week even more as the sailing regatta was on.

This Italian place is very casual but friendly, good food and has atmosphere.

Nice outside bar that later on turns into disco with a true Caribbean touch.

Being in the Caribbean, in Antigua 5 hours behind UK, meant a wake up call today at
5:30 am. Together with two billion other people I was watching the Royal Wedding.

I'm sure Kate is a result of Princess Diana, teaching her sons how to go for love...

Now they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walking the longest carpet in Britain.And the dress by Alexander Mc Queen is beautiful.

First Morning

First morning waking up in the Caribbean.
I'm on a mission; Island hopping for six weeks; seven islands and visiting 22 hotels. This is something I wanted to do for a long time and now I'm here. My intention is to find some lovely 'gems' and I'm sure so will happen.

I will not tell you about the hotels yet as it will take some time to sign exclusive contracts, all for the benefit for our valued clients. But you will certainly get some ideas what the Caribbean has to offer.

Historical Afternoon

Yesterday I was invited by Noppes for a historical afternoon at Riddarhuset; the House of Nobility in Stockholm.

The House of Nobility was commissioned in the 17 th century by the Swedish nobility, to whom it still belongs. The building remains one of the most exquisite works of architecture in northern Europe.

Peter Liilliehöök is not just a friend but an excellent tourguide and entertainer. Here Peter is giving us a historical lecture before entering the House.

This was the uniform of the Nobility year 1805

The Session Hall is decorated with 2325 escutcheons of the Swedish aristocracy.

I was in this hall once before, when I was awarded the Swedish Royal Patriotic Society medal for entrepreneurship in the field of trade and industry, presented by our Majesty King Carl-Gustav, year 2009

Our valued clients often write to us with feedback from their trips. Every once in a while an exceptional letter comes along, from someone so happy about their hotel experience they only have overwhelming things to say.
